Harness the Strength of Customer Trust: Simple Strategies to Boost Small Business Spending

The coronavirus pandemic has undeniably been a devastating event in recent history, necessitating a thorough analysis of its impact on our lives. While I will not delve into the vast amount of COVID-19 data, it is evident that the pandemic has significantly altered our perception of people, products, services, and even ourselves.

As individuals adapt to this new reality, businesses must also evolve to succeed. To navigate the post-pandemic landscape, it is crucial to understand how people have been affected. The transition from freedom to lockdown has had profound physical and mental consequences, with fear and skepticism becoming dominant emotions. This shift is especially evident in long-term commitments, such as travel plans, which many now approach with trepidation. To thrive in this uncertain future, businesses must reassess their strategies and adapt to the emerging needs of a transformed society (I share more on the subject in the following article "new humans on the horizon").

For most businesses, drastic changes may not be necessary. Instead, focusing on addressing the heightened fear and skepticism of customers can yield positive results. By implementing measures that provide reassurance and a sense of security, businesses can positively influence consumer behavior.

Make no mistake, some businesses have seen their commerce booming! In fact, as lockdowns became widespread, businesses and consumers increasingly turned to digital platforms, with online retail trade rising from 14% in 2019 to approximately 17% in 2020. The shift towards e-commerce was most pronounced in emerging economies, but countries with barriers such as costly broadband services, lack of trust, and poor digital skills risk falling further behind. The pandemic has largely benefited large digital platforms, while smaller players have struggled to compete [1]. Nothing new there!

Simple adjustments that can boost confidence in consumers' spending behavior, especially for small businesses

A few key actions can enhance the online customer experience, such as adopting secure communication protocols (HTTPs), displaying SSL certificates, showcasing testimonials, and including trust badges on websites. Providing clear customer support information, such as phone numbers and operating hours, further instills confidence in potential buyers. For businesses without a dedicated phone line, alternative support channels like social media, email, or on-site chatbots can be equally effective. Depending on the industry, offering flexible payment options, such as "book now, pay later" plans or installments with fair refund policies, can also be beneficial.

By emphasizing these elements and making them more visible to customers, businesses can effectively reassure their clientele and demonstrate their commitment to supporting them during these challenging times, and beyond. For further insight into consumer behavior during times of uncertainty, consider exploring the concepts of "Risk Compensation" and "Zero-Risk Bias". The website Smart Persuasion provides valuable resources on these topics, or for a more traditional approach, consider purchasing their book on the subject.
